IG suspends enforcement of e-CMR following public outcry

In a surprising turn of events, the enforcement of the electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) in Nigeria has been suspended following public outcry and criticism. The initial order by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to begin enforcing the e-CMR on July 29 sparked controversy and accusations of potential extortion from vehicle owners.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson, announced the suspension of the enforcement in a statement on Sunday. He emphasized the need for citizen sensitization on the initiative, which is aimed at securing vehicles and curbing vehicular crimes.

Contrary to rumors, Adejobi clarified that the e-CMR is not a revenue-generating platform but a digital policing initiative for enhancing effectiveness and ensuring the safety of lives and property in Nigeria. The system will provide real-time comprehensive data on vehicles to dedicated officers, prevent multiple registrations, and serve as a database for vehicle owners’ information.

The decision to suspend the enforcement was made to allow for mass enlightenment and education of citizens on the benefits and effectiveness of the e-CMR in addressing vehicle-related crimes and protecting individual and corporate vehicle ownership. Adejobi urged the public to understand and support the initiative for the greater good of the community.

The swift response to public concerns and the commitment to educating the citizens on the e-CMR highlights the importance of transparency and communication in implementing new initiatives. It also demonstrates the willingness of law enforcement agencies to listen to feedback and address issues raised by the public.

As the e-CMR initiative moves forward, it is essential for the authorities to continue engaging with the public, addressing concerns, and ensuring that the system is implemented in a transparent and effective manner. By working together, law enforcement and citizens can create a safer and more secure environment for all.
