Osun finance reports: Balancing between mischief and ignorance

Misleading Claims: Exposing the Truth Behind Osun State’s Debt Profile

Title: The Truth Behind Osun State’s External Debt: Debunking Misinformation

Introduction:
The political landscape in Osun State has been heating up recently, with the opposition party attempting to discredit the superlative performance of Governor Ademola Adeleke. One such attempt was a misleading article by Sesan Opadoyin on the state’s external borrowing, which has been debunked by a closer scrutiny of the facts. As a Special Assistant to the Governor, I feel compelled to set the record straight and shed light on the truth behind the misinformation being spread.

Debunking Misinformation:
Opadoyin’s claim that Governor Adeleke increased Osun’s external debt by N37bn in 2023 is not only false but also a clear misinterpretation of financial data. The reality is that Osun’s external debt actually decreased from $91,779,393.97 in 2022 to $87,247,488.51 in 2023. The apparent increase in naira value can be attributed to the significant devaluation of the currency during that period, not to reckless borrowing by the government.

Furthermore, the opposition’s criticism of the government’s expenditure on transportation fails to consider the impact of the suspension of the subsidy regime by President Bola Tinubu, which led to a sharp increase in fuel prices. It is important to take into account the rising costs associated with transportation and not simply point fingers without understanding the full picture.

Governor Adeleke’s Financial Discipline:
Contrary to the opposition’s claims, Governor Adeleke has demonstrated a high level of financial discipline in managing the state’s finances. If his predecessor had shown the same level of prudence, Osun would have seen greater progress in infrastructure development and welfare packages. The governor’s commitment to transparency and accountability is evident in the state’s financial reports, which are publicly available for scrutiny.

Conclusion:
As the political climate in Osun State continues to heat up, it is important to separate fact from fiction and not be swayed by misinformation and propaganda. Governor Adeleke’s track record speaks for itself, and it is clear that the opposition’s attempts to discredit him are based on falsehoods and ignorance. It is time for a more constructive and objective approach to governance and politics in Osun State, one that focuses on the real issues and the well-being of the people.
